As a rule, I typically don’t enjoy 3D Souls-likes. I like the FromSoftware games that inspired them, but those games work because of their meticulous world design, careful combat balance, and fantastic gameplay options. Many 3D games that aim to be “Souls-likes” typically miss the mark on all of those things and more. The Last Oricru falls into this, too. The thing that really smarts is that Souls combat and level design are in this game, but it mostly wants to be a story-focused action RPG....

Gollum or Sméagol? The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will follow the titular character before the events of The Lord of the Rings. There is no word on whether it will take place before or after The Hobbit, and Gollum lived for a very long time with the aid of the One Ring. So there is a lot of room for storytelling freedom, regardless of when the game is set. But my money is on a post-Hobbit story, which gave Gollum incentive to leave the cave he had dwelled in for so long....
Images of the PlayStation 5’s controller have leaked, and the photos show a device that looks like the DualShock 4 after going all out on the Christmas dinner (via VG247). In November 2019, a PlayStation 5 DualShock 5 patent popped up online. This showed off a rounder, chunkier controller with bigger triggers and what could be a microphone, adding credence to those PlayStation Assist rumblings. Sony did not acknowledge the patent, so we weren’t sure whether this was the next-generation doodad or a new current-generation product....

Nintendo has announced that the Switch has sold 22.86 million units worldwide following its release in March of last year. The figure was confirmed during the Big N’s latest financial report, where it also revealed that Switch software has topped 111 million as of September 30. The company now expects to ship 20 million Switch consoles during the period April 1, 2018 – March 31, 2019. For the record, the Switch has now managed to outsell the Nintendo GameCube....

Nintendo has unveiled the full details for the next fighter —or should that be fighters—entering the fray in Super Smash Bros Ultimate with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 characters Pyra and Mythra joining as DLC later today. In the video, which you can see below, series director Masahiro Sakurai detailed the character’s movesets, revealing that the living weapons come as one fighter who can be switched between both characters depending on the situation, with Pyra focused on power while Mythra’s strength is in her speed....

Techland has announced Dying Light: The Following, a major new story-based expansion that introduces vehicles and a massive new map to its hit survival horror. The new location is so big, in fact, that it promises to be as big as all previous maps from Dying Light combined. “For Dying Light: The Following we’re adding a number of bold game-changers to create one massive expansion. Something big that will give the game a brand-new flavor,”said producer Tymon Smektala....

Batman – The Telltale Series launched earlier this week to generally positive reviews, but head over to Steam and you’ll find review after review from angry gamers complaining about the poor PC version being unplayable. According to Telltale this isn’t the curse of Batman on PC coming back to haunt gamers – Warner had to pull Arkham Knight from sale after it launched in such a buggy state – but actually an issue associated with the game running on integrated graphics even when dedicated is available....
