When it came to sci-fi movies, 1996 was a crowded year: at the high end of the budget spectrum we had the invasion movies Independence Day and Mars Attacks; towards the middle we had John Carpenter’s disappointing Snake Plissken sequel Escape From LA, while Rutger Hauer starred in the cheap and cheerful Crossworlds and the brilliantly titled Omega Doom. Throw in the startlingly botched Island Of Doctor Moreau, Star Trek: First Contact, and Stuart Gordon’s fun sci-fi oddity Space Truckers, and you have a busy 12 months in genre movies....

Earlier today, developer Beethoven and Dinosaur and publisher Annapurna Interactive announced that its psychedelic jam-’em-up adventure, The Artful Escape, will be officially coming to PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch on Jan. 25. Tanks have dominated the original Overwatch, but with balance changes in Overwatch 2, they completely changed how the game is played. The Fugitive is becoming a TV show…again. The story of a wrongfully accused man being chased by a dogged detective is getting its third televised adaptation, and the first in the streaming era with new streaming service Quibi having ordered the new series. This version will take place in the modern era and star Boyd Holbrook as the titular fugitive and Kiefer Sutherland as his pursuer. Stephen Hopkins (24) will direct and produce....

Today SNK released a new trailer and screenshots showcasing another fighter that will be playable in its upcoming fighting game The King of Fighters XV. This time around we get to see another returning character, Elisabeth Blanctorche, who comes back to the stage after skipping The King of Fighters XIV. We also learn that she’s part of Team Ash alongside Ash Crimson himself and Kukri. You can check out the trailer just below and see her in action, alongside a few screenshots....

The Last Guardian has been handed yet another delay, this time moving its release date from October 28 to December 9, Sony has announced. “The Last Guardian development team is fast-approaching major milestones in production and has made the tough decision to delay the release of The Last Guardian by a few weeks. The Last Guardian will launch on 7th December 2016, across Europe and 9th December 2016 across UK & Ireland,” said Shuhei Yoshida, President, SCE Worldwide Studios....

Geoff Keighley, host of the Game Awards, announced on Twitter today that The Last of Us 2 developer Naughty Dog will hold a media event at the end of September. The event may finally reveal the release date of the much anticipated sequel. Naughty Dog hasn’t shown off anything substantial from The Last of Us 2 since E3 2018. At the event, the team premiered a lengthy gameplay demo that featured a level of polish that many though would push the game into the next console generation....

The Long Dark’s very first paid DLC is coming “later this year”. That’s according to a new developer diary in which Hinterland Studio reflects on the last eight years of development, as well as teasing what may be coming next, including a premium season pass to ensure the game “continues to be financially self-sustaining”. After focussing for so long on the sandbox and story modes, the team says it’s now ready to “decouple” them, mitigating issues that founder Raphael van Lierop says made development “unwieldy” at times....

Blizzard has announced on Twitter that an amiibo based on the loot goblin from Diablo III will be released in December and will be a Gamestop exclusive. The amiibo toyline started out with the characters from the Super Smash Bros. series and spread out to various different gaming franchises, some of which were quite surprising, like Solaire of Astora from Dark Souls. The latest addition to the amiibo line is coming from Diablo III, but it’s not the big red devil himself....

Alexis Kennedy, the creator of the steampunk survival RPG Sunless Sea (and its predecessor Fallen London), has talked to Eurogamer about his work with BioWare. Kennedy revealed he has ‘been given considerable autonomy to work on a storyline bit of lore which is well-segregated from other parts of the game.’ ‘It’s more analogous to Patrick Weekes writing Mordin than me being told to go off and write a whole different country… It’s nothing that grandiose, but it is distinct....

While you’re playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you’ll fight against several different types of monsters in your travels. Some of them will be classified as werewolves others as vampires or ghouls. There is no shortage of ferocious beings tucked away inside of Geralt’s Beastiary. However, there is also the common beast; these are typically creatures you’ll regularly find while trekking across the various game regions. The implication by Nintendo is that the Spyro Reignited Trilogy won’t fit on one Switch cartridge - or is it that Activision doesn’t want it to? Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds wants G2A to pay out $300,000 in order to cover 10 times the money they lost due to credit card chargebacks. You might not have heard of G2A, the digital marketplace that specializes in reselling gaming products. Actually, they mostly make their bank on reselling product codes for Steam, Origin, Xbox, and other digital platforms. The problem here is that G2A has had some… shall we say, “shady” business practices in the past....

Summer in Mara‘s has an aesthetic that makes it seem instantly inviting. Character portraits are gorgeous, detailed, and full of color. The game even has a lovely, yet brief animated video shortly after the prologue. Whenever character portraits and dialogue are on screen, there’s plenty to like. The dialogue is witty and fun and the characters are often interesting. Unfortunately, everything else the game does is middling at best, and downright tedious and obnoxious at worst....

Nintendo has announced that Super Mario Maker 2 is winging its way to the Switch this summer. The craft-’em-up sequel was revealed during the Big N’s Direct event last night, and will be released in June. Super Mario Maker 2 will chuck in a bunch of new features, including the ability to cobble together angled surfaces, something which was not possible in the original Super Mario Maker. In addition, the game will include assets from Super Mario 3D World, which should please fans of Mazza’s more recent Goomba-stomping antics....

A new trailer for System Shock 3 has been published, which shows off the sequel’s spooky and squishy pre-alpha gameplay. ‘Run rabbit run, you won’t get far,’ SHODAN intones over clips of the ruined space station, populated with grotesque cyborgs and mutated humans that hunt down the protagonist. It’s very Dead Space-y and SOMA-y, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as OtherSide Entertainment has evidently succeeded at replicating the horrifying atmosphere of the original System Shocks....
