Sunless Sea and Fallen London developer Failbetter Games is interested in bringing its titles to consoles, lead game developer Liam Welton has confirmed.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Welton discussed the possibility of the team’s text-heavy games fitting console gamers, while also discussing the move to mobile.

“I feel our games are natural fits for mobile, natural fits for tablets, natural fits for PC, but there’s always been this big question mark over – would someone want to sit there and read in the living room on a console?” he said.

“I don’t think people sit in front of a console and go, ‘I expect to shoot things in the face’. I think people are now, ‘I don’t know what this is going to be like’ – I think [with] games like Journey, people say, ‘I’m willing to give this a go’.

“It’s a space we’re really, really interested in looking at. Yes, it’s going to involve a lot of reading and the way we choose to get that text up there and make sure people want to read it, they’re challenges, but they’re challenges that we’re really excited about facing.”

Welton also discussed the team having to break new ground due to the lack of similar-games currently on home consoles.

“We would be really interested to see how it would work. There’s so many question marks,” said Welton when questioned directly about Sunless Sea on consoles.

“It’s really hard, because it’s not like I can’t think of any game that’s currently on consoles to go, ‘Oh yeah, that works, so we could see our game working in the same way’.

“It feels like that’s something we’re going to have to try out internally, and then go, ‘Is this good?’ It’s something we’re definitely interested in.”
