Dicey Dungeons, the next game from the developer of VVVVVV and Super Hexagon, will roll onto Steam on August 13.

The game has been available in its alpha build on itch.io since last summer. Players explore procedurally generated dungeons as characterful dice; there are six classes including warrior, thief, robot, jester, inventor and witch. The classes offer different buffs to gameplay, for example the inventor will construct new gadgets from their current gear each turn, and the thief nicks random enemy weaponry.

Rats, goblin bullies, alchemists and more block the path to slaying the capricious Lady Luck, and the fights involve deck-building abilities, rolling the correct total to activate these, or lobbing the dice at the enemy for attack points. The rewards net you coins to buy new gear from the shop, or you may be lucky enough to find a treasure chest buried deep in the dungeon levels.

The odds were in my favour way back in April, as I got to play the demo build at EGX Rezzed. I’m not very familiar with roguelikes, but it’s impossible to resist its charming art and bouncy tunes. Don’t be cavalier, though, because the battles will have you dicing with defeat. Also I won a badge!
