This year PlayStation celebrated its 25th anniversary. Although 2019 wasn’t filled with any grand slams, like God of War or Grand Theft Auto, what it did leave us with is the excitement that the console wars may be heating up again.  Most importantly, PlayStation is bringing the year to a close on a high note for fans. With new announcements and hype around a brand new console, games, and updated controller, there is much to look forward to in 2020.

In 2020 there are tons of games coming down the pipeline, including for every genre, type of player, and even the resurrection of some old gems.  This post looks at the top 10 most anticipated games coming out for PlayStation in 2020.

10 Godfall

The very first game announced for the PlayStation 5 is Godfall. It’s a third-person fantasy looter-slasher game focused on melee combat.  Made by Gearbox Publishing, Counterplay Games, and Epic Games, which are best known for titles like Borderlands and Fortnite.

Godfall is said to be similar in gameplay to Diablo, Warframe, and Darksiders.  The main character is a lion-like creature in armor with Lich King vibes.  You can play it in solo, duo, or three-player co-op. The launch eta is Christmas 2020. Hopefully, it’s worth the wait!

9 Dreams

Dreams is considered a game creation system. The mechanic is built around user-generated content, where players are given the tools to make fully-fledged video games, music, art, and sculptures for other players to experience. The gameplay is a mix of Little Big Planet meets Crash Bandicoot and Mario Kart. Depending on the mini-game you select, you can skateboard, car race, hover, or run through.

The concept is similar to the Create Mode in the game Little Big Planet, which makes sense since Media Molecule is behind both projects. In the case of Dreams, the depth and styles to which you can build are much vaster, including retro-futurism, cartoon, eerie, realistic, outer-space, and just plain cutesy. Gameplay includes a solo and cooperative multiplayer mode. Dreams is set to be released around Valentine’s day 2020.

8 Rust

Rust is a brutal multiplayer survival game.  The game has been called a realistic version of Minecraft. The objective is to survive the wilderness and thrive with gathered and stolen items. Like in real life, you have to manage your thirst, hunger, and health. Raiding is a staple for players who have what it takes to make weapons or can persuade fellow players to team up.

It’s a multiplayer-only game, and there are no challenges or tasks other than some instructions to get you started. To make the game fair, the map resets after a certain period of time. Rust is confirmed to be released in 2020, with no specific drop-dead date yet.

7 Watch Dogs: Legion

Watch Dogs: Legion is an action-adventure game made by Ubisoft. The game is an open-world concept, where you can play multiple characters, played from the third-person perspective. Each character has unique abilities, which can be honed and leveled up. The game is set in London, during a time where extremists are in power and their killer robots fly about the city ready to shoot down anyone not playing by the rules.

You are, of course, a part of the resistance. Your role is to recruit characters in a resistance group, resembling Fight Club. The people you recruit and how you interact with others change the game’s narrative as you play. You can play several players and can team up with up to four for a multiplayer mode. Watch Dogs: Legion is expected to be released around April 2020.

6 Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world action-adventure game.  From the first-person perspective, the story takes place in a metropolis of the future, which has six regions to play in. You play the outlaw mercenary at the heart of the story-line.  Made by CD PROJEKT, the maker of The Witcher series, the game draws inspiration from the 1982 film Blade Runner.

Character creation is similar to an RPG, including customization of looks and style as well as abilities. So you can create a robust solo player or a hybrid class that’s better for team play.  This makes it possible to play the game with brute force or as the strong silent, deadly hacker type, just depending on how you like to play.

Made famous for its unveil at E3 with the help of Keanu Reeves, the actor also has a starring role in the game. The game is expected to launch in 2020, with no specific date noted, yet.

5 The Last Of Us Part II

The Last of Us Part II is an action-adventure and horror survival game. It’s set five years after the first game was released in 2013. Situated in the post-apocalyptic United States, you play character Ellie, a 19-year-old. In the third-person perspective, you use all types of weapons and means necessary to defend against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures. Where the first game was centered around a love story, part II is centered around hate. Gameplay includes moments of absolute terror mixed with unbridled rage.

The game was made by Naughty Dog, known for the game Uncharted and Jak and Daxter. The Last of Us Part II is set to be released on May 29th, 2020.

4 Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima is a single-player action-adventure game. The game revolves around a samurai characters on Tsushima Island during the Mongrol invasion of Japan in the 1270s.  The open-world map can be explored without guidance and any waypoints. Similar to World of Warcraft, side quests pop up along the way with the end goal of the game being to defeat the Mongol Empire and fight for the freedom and independence of Japan.

Graphics are highly realistic, and the scenery is beautiful.  Unlike multi-player games, you are alone, so it’s you against the world — your katana weapon is your best friend.

Made by Sucker Punch Productions, known for the inFamous series and The Sly Collection. Ghost of Tsushima is expected to roll out for PlayStation Q2/Q3 2020.

3 Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a role-playing action game.  Like the version it was designed after, the 1997 PlayStation Game Final Fantasy VII, you play Cloud, a funky looking sword yielding badass. As part of eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE, you battle the corrupt Shinra megacorporation. The gameplay is similar to Dissidia Final Fantasy.

The game will have a classic turn-based role-playing mode, along with switching between characters to take advantage of the fighting situation.  So you can switch to Barrett, who has a long-range weapon more effective than Cloud. Along with regular attacks, you can also throw things, do abilities, and cast spells.  Final Fantasy VII Remake was hyped at E3 2019, and is set to be released on March 3, 2020, and will be exclusive to PlayStation until March 3rd, 2021.

2 Persona 5: Royal

Personas 5: Royal is a single-player, role-playing game. The anime based game is the 6th installed of the Persona series. The story-line takes place in Tokyo and follows the character Joker on his journey to Shujin Academy after he was falsely accused of assault. He and other students of the school magically awaken to special powers and become a group of vigilantes known as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.

The game has a night and day cycle and weather systems, which determine general behavior like a social situation game like The Sims. As the main character, besides kicking ass, you can also pursue leisure activities like playing pool and even take on a part-time job.  The graphics themselves are bright, flashy, and very animated, which makes even mundane tasks look exciting. Persona 5: Royal is made P-Studio and is set to be released in March 2020.

1 Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 is a survival horror and action role-playing game.  The game is the sequel to 2015’s Dying Light. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic time in a cityscape, filled with hooligans and zombies. You play a scrappy parkour protagonist named Aiden. Although he doesn’t have special abilities, he’s able to use a grappling hook and paragliding to pull off some Spider-Man and Batman-like maneuvers.

As a role-playing game, the game reacts and changes based on your everyday decisions. If you take out certain enemy faction members, it changes the dynamic of the city and the availability of resources like food and water.  Like in real life, every action has an equal and opposite reaction, which includes giving another enemy faction more run of the city. In this way, each player’s game experience will be a unique one.

Developed by Techland Publishing, Dying Light 2 is set to be released Q1/Q2 2020.
