When people see the designs of Pokemon, they often imagine them being very large. The truth is, though, that when looking at the Pokedex, many of them are not as big as they first appear. The beloved Pokemon anime has been known to take liberties with some of the sizes too, so players are naturally surprised to realize that a Pokemon such as Groudon is only 11 feet tall.
Gaze now upon the twenty-two biggest Pokemon in existence, though readers should try not to hurt their necks while looking up at them. All of these Pokemon are easily the height of two or three people, if not many, many more.
Updated October 30, 2021 by Tom Bowen: The Pokemon series has, due to its very nature, always been a little larger than life. It features some incredibly interesting regions and a memorable cast of characters that make exploring them all the more enjoyable. The real stars of the show, however, are the eponymous Pokemon themselves, each of which has its own unique design. Most of them are relatively small and are for the most part in keeping with the animals that populate the real world when it comes to size. Others, however, are much much bigger, helping to further strengthen the sense of wonder among players. These are the franchise’s biggest Pokemon, at least according to their listed heights in the Pokedex, anyway.
22 Palkia (14 feet)
Palkia, a member of the Creation Trio of legendary Pokemon, is coincidentally the shortest of the three. For whatever reason, controlling the fabric of space makes Palkia slightly less tall. Although it’s often not as beloved and remembered as either of the other two, it’s far from being a short king.
Palkia stacks up at just under 14 feet and is also tied for height with Dawn Wings Necrozma. It’s also a bit of a hunchback, so maybe if it had better posture it would be slightly bigger. Either way Palkia’s still incredibly powerful and is certainly a behemoth compared to many other Pokemon.
Pokedex Info On Palkia
- Type:
- Water/Dragon
- Generation Introduced:
- Diamond and Pearl
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Special Attack. Lowest in HP.
- Interesting Fact:
- Its affinity to water is due to its association with pearls (as it was the Pearl exclusive legendary).
How To Catch Palkia In Sword And Shield
Palkia is Shield exclusive. Those with Sword will have to trade with a player that has Shield to get one. Not only that, but the Shield players only have access to Palkia if they have the Crown Tundra DLC. With the DLC, Palkia can be caught in Dynamax Adventures.
21 Primal Groudon (16 feet)
With its regular form standing at an impressive 11 feet tall, Groudon is already a fairly large Pokemon. When in its Primal form, however, Groudon grows to a mighty 16 feet, making it one of the twenty biggest Pokemon in the franchise. For context, that’s measurably taller than a double-decker bus, though only half the height of its Primal counterpart, Kyogre.
Together with Kyogre and Rayquaza, Groudon serves as a mascot for the third generation of Pokemon games and is one of the series’ super-ancient Pokemon. It’s said to be able to expand continents by lowering the sea level, which is part of the reason why Team Magma works so hard to track it down in Ruby, Emerald, and Omega Ruby.
Pokedex Info On Primal Groudon
- Type:
- Ground/Fire
- Generation Introduced:
- Ruby and Sapphire
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Attack. Lowest in Speed and Special Defense.
- Interesting Fact:
- Primal Groudon is both the tallest and the heaviest fire-type Pokemon in the series.
How To Catch Groudon In Sword And Shield
Groudon is catchable via Crown Tundra’s Dynamax Adventures, though only in Pokemon Sword. Those with Pokemon Shield will need to import the Pokemon by trading or using Pokemon Home. Unfortunately, Groudon’s Primal form is unavailable in the gen 8 games.
20 Zygarde 50% (16 feet)
Interestingly enough, the incomplete form of Zygarde is actually nearly two feet taller than its Complete Forme. Serpent-like Pokemon tend to be considered taller than their bipedal or quadrupedal counterparts. It makes sense why the incomplete Zygarde is considered bigger, but it is still funny.
Zygarde, despite never getting the treatment of becoming a box legendary, is still a powerful Pokemon. It played a big role both in the anime and in a Sun and Moon sidequest involving collecting Zygarde cells. Most recently, Zygarde is the super boss of Dynamax Adventures, getting two phases in its battle.
Pokedex Info On Zygarde
- Type:
- Dragon/Ground
- Generation Introduced:
- X and Y
- Base Stats:
- (In 50% form) Highest in Defense. Lowest in Special Attack.
- Interesting Fact:
- Its name and forms are inspired by Norse mythology.
How To Catch Zygarde In Sword And Shield
The way to catch Zygarde in Sword and Shield is the same as Giratina. It can only be caught in the Dynamax Adventures from the Crown Tundra DLC.
19 Lugia (17 feet)
Lugia, the box legendary of Pokemon Silver and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, has long been an iconic and familiar legendary. It’s the guardian of the seas, and this means it needs a body fit for navigating the ocean depths. Although it is still a bird of sorts, its serpent-like features give it some extra length.
Lugia’s height is about 17 feet on the dot, making it nearly four feet taller than Ho-Oh. Its wings are huge, allowing it to use its signature Aeroblast move. And yet, despite its connections to the ocean depths, it’s a psychic-type.
Pokedex Info On Lugia
- Type:
- Psychic/Flying
- Generation Introduced:
- Gold and Silver
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Special Defense. Lowest in Attack.
- Interesting Fact:
- Despite being a psychic-type in the mainline video games, Lugia is sometimes depicted as a water-type in the
- Pokemon
- trading card game.
How To Catch Lugia In Sword And Shield
Lugia is a Shield exclusive legendary that can only be caught in the Crown Tundra DLC with Dynamax Adventures. Sword players can get Lugia via trade or transfer.
18 Dialga (18 feet)
The third member of the Creation Trio, Dialga, also makes it onto the list as one of the biggest Pokemon in the series’ history. Dialga has a much better posture than Palkia, standing with its head tall and a glorious crown of silver spikes adorning it. As a lord of time, it certainly deserves its terrifying, yet regal look.
Dialga clocks in at 17 feet and 9 inches, making it just a short step away from 18 feet tall. It’s a behemoth even compared to Palkia or Altered Forme Giratina, even if it gets dwarfed by Origin Forme Giratina. In its name, more people seemed to have been drawn to Pokemon Diamond, and Dialga’s cosmically commanding presence is a part of that.
Pokedex Info On Dialga
- Type:
- Steel/Dragon
- Generation Introduced:
- Diamond and Pearl
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Special Attack. Lowest in Speed.
- Interesting Fact:
- Has the highest base Special Attack out of all steel-types.
How To Catch Dialga In Sword And Shield
Dialga is a Sword exclusive Pokemon, and only available to catch in Dynamax Adventures in the Crown Tundra DLC. Shield players can get Dialga either through transfer or trade.
17 Guzzlord (18 Feet)
Most people can get a sense of what Guzzlord is all about just from its apt name. Known as the “Junkivore Pokemon,” Guzzlord is an Ultra Beast given the code name “UB-05 Glutton” for good reason: this beast has devoured mountains and buildings whole, while never having left any traceable droppings. Logically, one needs to be tall in order to swallow buildings, and 18 feet is a pretty good start.
Though it’s a rare and dangerous beast to the Earth, Pokemon Ultra Sun’s Pokédex entry notes it as a “Common organism in the world where it normally lives.”
Pokedex Info On Guzzlord
- Type:
- Dark/Dragon
- Generation Introduced:
- Sun and Moon
- Base Stats:
- Highest in HP. Lowest in Speed.
- Interesting Fact:
- Guzzlord is the heaviest dark-type Pokemon.
How To Catch Guzzlord In Sword And Shield
Guzzlord is unobtainable in Sword and Shield. The games it can be caught in so far include Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon.
16 Stakataka (18 Feet)
Stakatake is a Pokemon exclusively available in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon when players are allowed a deeper look into Ultra Space. Ultra Sun’s Pokédex entry notes that it came from an Ultra Wormhole and is apparently “made up of many life-forms stacked one on top of each other.”
Since Stakatake is basically a living building, it has a massive base Defense stat of 211 and a terrible base Speed stat of 13. To be fair, buildings don’t usually tend to go places, especially not at a fast pace, either, so the low Speed stat definitely checks out.
Pokedex Info On Stakataka
- Type:
- Rock/Steel
- Generation Introduced:
- Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Defense. Lowest in Speed.
- Interesting Fact:
- It is the heaviest rock-type Pokemon of all.
How To Catch Stakataka In Sword And Shield
Stakataka can be transferred or caught in either game with the Crown Tundra DLC. It is catchable in Dynamax Adventures.
15 Yveltal (19 Feet)
Introduced as Pokemon Y’s mascot, Yveltal is the Pokemon of Destruction, acting as a member of the aura trio along with Xerneas and Zygarde. With a full length of exactly 19 feet, Yveltal is able to absorb the life force of other living creatures when its wings and feathers are spread wide and glow red.
Pokemon Y’s Pokedex says that upon its life’s end, it “absorbs the life energy of every living thing and turns into a cocoon once more.”
Pokedex Info On Yveltal
- Type:
- Dark/Flying
- Generation Introduced:
- X and Y
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Attack and Special Attack. Lowest in Defense.
- Interesting Fact:
- When Yveltal dies, it absorbs all life and turns into a cocoon.
How To Catch Yveltal In Sword And Shield
Yveltal is unavailable in Sword and Shield. The games it can be caught in include X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire.
14 Milotic (20 Feet)
Coming in at a staggering 20 feet is the dazzling Milotic. This divine creature comes from the humble beginnings of a Feebas and evolves to be even taller than the legendary Pokemon of Destruction. While it is a large, snake-like Pokemon, it is known to be gentle, trying to calm people’s feelings.
While it is not legendary, Milotic has a fantastic move set and can easily hold its own in battle. The only hassle is jamming enough Pokéblocks or Poffins into a Feebas to get it to evolve. Many say that Milotic acts as a semi-counterpart Pokemon to Gyarados, another serpentine water-type Pokemon that towers over its competition.
Pokedex Info On Milotic
- Type:
- Water
- Generation Introduced:
- Sapphire and Ruby
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Special Defense: Lowest in Attack.
- Interesting Fact:
- Tied with Gyarados in terms of the highest increase in base stat totals after evolving.
How To Catch Milotic In Sword And Shield
Milotic is available to catch in the wild in both base games. They can be found at the Lake of Outrage and South Lake Miloch. In terms of Max Raid battles, they can sometimes appear in Bridge Field, East Lake Axewell, the Lake of Outrage, and West Lake Axewell. In the Crown Tundra DLC, they can be found at the Giant’s Bed.
13 Hoopa Unbound (21 Feet)
Just one foot above Milotic is the legendary Hoopa in its Unbound form. Hoopa Unbound has the highest base Special Attack of all dark-type Pokemon, and is tied with Mega Gyarados and Umbreon for the highest Special Defense stat of dark-types.
Hoopa’s overall design seems to be based on Djinn (or genies) while its Unbound form resembles the six-armed Hindu deities known as Shakti. Equally likely is inspiration drawn from Taoist deity Nezha, known both as a trickster and protector of the world who also holds rings.
Pokedex Info On Hoopa
- Type:
- Psychic/Ghost
- Generation Introduced:
- X and Y
- Base Stats:
- (Unbound form) Highest in Special Attack. Lowest in Defense.
- Interesting Fact:
- Is tied with Mega Gyarados for being the tallest dark-type.
How To Catch Hoopa In Sword And Shield
Hoopa is unavailable in Sword and Shield both in terms of catching and transferring.
12 Mega Gyarados (21 Feet)
Tied with Hoopa Unbound for height is Mega Gyarados. Unlike Milotic, it is not a calm Pokemon at all. In fact, its Pokédex entry in Pokemon Sun reads “Mega Evolution also affects its brain, leaving no other function except its destructive instinct to burn everything to cinders.”
So, just to clarify, not only is Mega Gyarados very big, but it also has a dangerous personality to match. Luckily, the bond between Pokemon and Trainer is strong enough to stop Gyarados from losing control…usually.
Pokedex Info On Mega Gyarados
- Type:
- Water/Dark
- Generation Introduced:
- Sun and Moon
- Base Stats:
- Highest In Attack. Lowest in Special Attack.
- Interesting Fact:
- Has the highest base Attack of all water-types.
How To Catch Gyarados In Sword And Shield
Unfortunately, Mega Evolutions are unavailable in Sword and Shield. However, regular Gyarados can be caught in many locations. They can be caught via fishing and using the move Surf in most lakes and beaches.
11 Giratina Origin Forme (22 Feet)
Giratina is only the only ghost/dragon-type to exist so far, and its uniqueness has fans clamoring for any news about its upcoming game remake. Giratina has a lot going for it, being a legendary that represents antimatter, rebellion, and general bad behavior (bad behavior that got it banned to the Distortion World by Arceus.)
Only in the Distortion World can Giratina naturally take its Origin Forme and become 22 feet tall. Among all legendary Pokemon, Giratina may not be the biggest, but it is definitely the edgiest.
Pokedex Info On Giratina’s Origine Forme
- Type:
- Ghost/Dragon
- Generation Introduced:
- Platinum
- Base Stats:
- Highest in HP. Lowest in Speed.
- Interesting Fact:
- Is the tallest ghost-type.
How To Catch Giratina In Sword And Shield
Unlike Palkia, Giratina is not version exclusive. However, the Crown Tundra DLC is still needed. Giratina is catchable via Crown Tundra’s Dynamax Adventures.
10 Ultra Necrozma (24 Feet)
Necrozma is a Pokemon with many different forms, each one with its own distinct height and weight. Interestingly, despite being almost twice as tall as its Dusk Mane counterpart, Ultra Necrozma weighs in at only half as much. That said, at 230 KG, it is still heavier than the likes of Onix and Regirock.
First introduced in gen 7, Necrozma is the mascot for both Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, making it one of only two Pokemon to have appeared on the box art of both skews of a Pokemon game (the other being Kyurem in Black 2 and White 2). It has four different types depending on fusions and is the third and final member of the Light trio.
Pokedex Info On Ultra Necrozma
- Type:
- Psychic/Dragon
- Generation Introduced:
- Sun and Moon
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Attack and Special Attack. Lowest in HP, Defense, and Special Defense.
- Interesting Fact:
- Necrozma is the only member of the Light trio with a base stat that isn’t a prime number.
How To Catch Necrozma In Sword And Shield
Players can catch Necrozma in the Dyanamax Adventures mode that’s included in the Crown Tundra. Those without the DLC will need to obtain Necrozma via trade or transfer instead.
9 Wishiwashi School Form (26 Feet)
Wishiwashi is a bit of an enigma. At times, it can be one of the best water Pokemon in the entire series, but there are others in which it is one of the very worst. It’s a little like Magikarp in that respect, though rather than its usefulness being determined by whether or not it has evolved yet, it’s decided by the form that Wishiwashi takes.
As well as being gigantic in size, Wishiwashi’s school form boasts a base stat total of 620, making it stronger than many Legendary Pokemon (on paper, at least), not to mention all nine of the pseudo-legendaries. Given that it reverts back to its solo form once its HP falls below 25% though, it’s a risky Pokemon to include in one’s party, particularly in competitive play.
Pokedex Info On Wishiwashi School Form
- Type:
- Water
- Generation Introduced:
- Sun and Moon
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Attack and Special Attack. Lowest in Speed.
- Interesting Fact:
- Wishiwashi’s base stat total increases by 354% (175 to 620) when transforming from its Solo to School form; an increase that is far greater than any other Pokemon with multiple forms.
How To Catch Wishiwashi In Sword And Shield
Wishiwashi can be found by fishing in numerous locations throughout Sword and Shield, including Axew’s Eye, and the second area of the Forest of Focus. The best places to look are around Honeycalm Island or on Route 9, however, as the chances of catching one are much higher there; as too are the levels of the Wishiwashi that can be caught.
8 Onix (28 Feet)
The staple Pokemon of Gym leader Brock, this rock/ground-type Pokemon has been around since the very beginning and once held the golden title of “largest Pokemon.” Sadly, times change and the crown is handed off to newer, taller creatures, but Onix’s importance will never be forgotten.
They are neither legendary nor are they an evolution of any smaller Pokemon like others on this list, making their huge size quite special in that regard. Nobody in their right mind would want to make such an intimidating creature mad.
Pokedex Info On Onix
- Type:
- Rock/Ground
- Generation Introduced:
- Red, Blue, and Green
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Defense. Lowest in Special Attack.
- Interesting Fact:
- Is the heaviest and tallest unevolved Pokemon.
How To Catch Onix In Sword And Shield
Onix can be caught in the base games at East Lake Axewell during Intense Sun or Sandstorms. For the highest spawn rate, they appear in the grass at the Motostoke Riverbank in Sandstorms. They can also be found at the Giant’s Seat and Rolling Fields.
7 Celesteela (30 Feet)
Celesteela is an Ultra Beast from Generation VII and stands as the largest of all the Ultra Beasts. Its Pokédex entry calls it the “Launch Pokemon,” a nod towards its spaceship appearance. Some have also noted its physical resemblance to Princess Kaguya in The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. Its name is most likely a combination of celestial, steel, and “stella”, which is Latin for star.
Not only is Celesteela one of the tallest Pokemon, but it is also one of the heaviest. It ties with Cosmoem, weighing in at over 2,200 pounds, which is twice as heavy as a grand piano.
Pokedex Info On Celesteela
- Type:
- Steel/Flying
- Generation Introduced:
- Sun and Moon
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Special Attack. Lowest in Speed.
- Interesting Fact:
- Is tied with Cosmoem as the heaviest Pokemon of all.
How To Cath Celesteela In Sword And Shield
While Celesteela can be caught in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, it cannot be obtained in Sword and Shield.
6 Primal Kyogre (32 Feet)
Kyogre sits with Groudon and Rayquaza as part of the weather trio of Hoenn, brought back in Generation VI’s Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire with its new Primal form. Since Kyogre has the ability to expand oceans, it would need a massive amount of power to do so, and a massive body to contain such power. Some even consider it to be a personification of the ocean itself.
Kyogre goes from 14 feet to a whopping 32 feet in its Primal form, gaining over 170 lbs in the process and giving Groudon a run for its money. Its gorgeous design has led many fans to create art for it, including beautiful type reimaginings.
Pokedex Info On Primal Kyogre
- Type:
- Water
- Generation Introduced:
- Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Special Attack. Lowest in Defense and Speed.
- Interesting Fact:
- Is the heaviest water-type Pokemon.
How To Catch Kyogre In Sword And Shield
Kyogre is catchable via Crown Tundra’s Dynamax Adventures, though only in Pokemon Shield. Those with Pokemon Sword will need to import the Pokemon by trading or using Pokemon Home. Unfortunately, Kyogre’s Primal form is unavailable in the gen 8 games.
5 Mega Steelix (34 Feet)
With Onix making the list, it’s not surprising that its taller evolution would as well. Mega Steelix is six feet higher than Onix, making it the tallest of both steel-types and ground-types. While in its Mega form, its base Defense stat reaches a staggering 230, making it the highest of all ground-type Pokemon and leaving it tied with Mega Aggron for the highest Defense of all steel-type Pokemon.
When it isn’t busy being huge and having record-breaking stats, Mega Steelix takes full advantage of its amazing shiny form, glittering like a huge golden tower.
Pokedex Info On Mega Steelix
- Type:
- Steel/Ground
- Generation Introduced:
- Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Defense. Lowest in Speed.
- Interesting Fact:
- Is the tallest steel and ground-type.
How To Catch Steelix In Sword And Shield
Steelix can be caught at the Giant’s Mirror and Giant’s Seat during most kinds of weather. They can be only caught at level 50.
4 Mega Rayquaza (35 Feet)
Known to be the argument-queller in the weather trio, Rauquaza plays an important role in every game featuring the Hoenn region, particularly Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire’s Delta Episode. Pitting Rayquaza against Deoxys may seem fair until one realizes that Deoxys is only five feet tall. Yes, there are humans who are taller than Deoxys!
Some Pokedex entries claim Rayquaza is hundred of millions of years old, meaning that it may have grown to be the size it is today, similar to how humans have gradually grown taller throughout history. Even when not in its Mega form, Rayquaza measures in at an impressive 23 feet, which is almost taller than Kyogre and Groudon combined.
Pokedex Info On Rayquaza
- Type:
- Dragon/Flying
- Generation Introduced:
- Sapphire and Ruby
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Attack and Special Attack. Lowest in Special Defense
- Interesting Fact:
- Its catch rate was raised from three to 45 in
- Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
How To Catch Rayquaza In Sword And Shield
Like many other legendaries, Rayquaza is only catchable for those with the Crown Tundra DLC in Dynamax Adventures. Others can trade or transfer.
3 Alolan Exeggutor (35 Feet)
This cheerful tree is over 35 feet tall, dwarfing its non-Alolan relatives. Alolan Exeggutor trades its dual grass/psychic typing for grass/dragon, allowing it to learn the move, Dragon Hammer, upon evolving and other useful dragon-type moves via TM.
Alolan Exeggutor’s massive size may be a reference to Island gigantism, a biological phenomenon in which animal species isolated on an island grow much larger than their mainland relatives. Of course, it also may just be a reference to tall palm trees, too.
Pokedex Info On Alolan Exeggutor
- Type:
- Grass/Dragon
- Generation Introduced:
- Sun and Moon
- Base Stats:
- Highest in Special Attack. Lowest in Speed.
- Interesting Fact:
- Its dragon-typeness is a reference to the dracaena genus of trees.
How To Catch An Alolan Exeggutor In Sword And Shield
There are only two ways to get an Alolan Exeggutor in Sword and Shield. Both require one of the DLC though. One way is to find 75 Alolan Diglett in the Isle of Armor and turn them in to an DLC for a reward. Another way is to trade a regular Exeggutor with Regina in the Isle of Armor.
