The Dragon Age games are renowned for being some of the best RPGs that are playable, with some superb replay value. Yes, not every Dragon Age was perfect. But a few will hold a special place in our hearts.

For those that have fond memories of these titles, what are the best and worst boss fights that you can remember? Were they the best because of the nightmare difficulty setting, and it was a challenge? Or were they the best because they were memorable, that the fight had a huge purpose in the game? Or maybe that boss just has to die.

10 Best: Arishok

This boss is introduced by throwing a severed head down a flight of stairs, as it bounces towards a crop of horrified nobles, and as one answers back to how dare he, one of his guards breaks his neck without hesitation. The Arishok is the highest-ranking military officer among the Qunari. He appears out of nowhere, takes the town for over, and starts a religious faction as he takes a seat of power.

Due to the corruption of the town, he wants to wash his hands of it, but Arishok is unable to do so, so he chooses to cleanse the corruption with his bare hand, and queue the Qunari revolt.

The player has the choice of negotiations, but if they go poorly, be ready for this massive mammoth of a guy. The build-up towards this boss fight si whats brilliant, his title, his cult.

9 Worst: Corpyheus

This guy is one of the hardest in Dragon Age Inquisition, though not entirely because of his boss fight. It’s getting to him, which is half the fight, as you have to go through the entire prison, which of course, dwindles resources. One of the main issues is figuring out the mazes and manually controlling each character through them unless you want them all to die.

When the boss fight happens, it’s 10% fighting and 90% micromanaging your party, so they don’t meet their demise by walking into the fire, which they like to do.

8 Best: Loghain

Loghain is not a nice person, and that’s putting it politely. He’s the type of character that believes the end justifies the means and has also tried to kill the main character multiple times. Loghain is trying to save the world in his own way, and if half the world burns because of that, he truly doesn’t care.

When you can finally duel him, it’s a great moment as you can eventually end his miserable life. The fight itself isn’t overly great, its the satisfaction of ending this scums life.

7 Worst: Harvester

One of the most annoying fights in the game, mostly because of the number of enemies he can summon to help him. Some players even go to the extreme of respeccing into an archer, to make this fight more manageable. Aside from the hordes of skeletons the Harvester has summoned, there is a switch that you need to press during the first form of this fight. And during the absolute carnage that ensues who can notice a switch!

However, this switch is integral to the fight, and anyone who misses it, it’ll lead to your doom. Sadly though, in his second form, there is no more switch to help out. This fight is purely based on the DPS, the amount of damage the player can deal as quickly as possible. If the damage output is weak compared to the number of skeletons being summoned, you’ll drown by them the number.

6 Best: Envy Demon

The premise of this fight is why it’s so good, it’s simple, and that’s why it’s great. The envy demon wishes to become someone, not emulate someone to become them. So they hunt and find someone in power, such as an influential leader or a King, as stalk them, maybe for a little while, perhaps for a long time. When they feel like they’ve learned enough, they’ll assume their identity and be near impossible to distinguish between the two people. By slaughtering the person copied, they have essentially become that person.

But envy is a human emotion, envy cannot be quenched, it’s never sated, so they want to become an even more powerful person. When you battle this envy demon, you’re fighting something that is human emotion but in demon form, just a repulsive demon form.

5 Worst: Gurd Harofsen

This fight is genuinely brutal, but mainly because you are stuck. Players cannot go back, nor can they change their party or even equip any potions. So whatever builds or strategies the player has concocted, they’re going to have to make do with them. Perhaps sometimes planning isn’t the best course of action.

If you’re playing on nightmare as this is even more aggravating, as specific builds are more or less needed to kill some of these bosses, and if it’s your first time getting to this point, you’re in a for a world of trouble.

4 Best: Mother

This monstrosity is half boss half lore, as before the fight ensues, the Mother explains what happened, how the Darkspawn came about, and for those interested in the story, this is important. The Mother is a naked, tentacle, horrendous looking bug thing, that produces thousands of Darkspawn a year.  However, this one is different from the rest of Broodmothers, as this one is unique because she is a human Broodmother.

The design of this creature is fantastic; it’s the perfect demonic entity that is a mixture of all sorts of disgusting things, and sadly that includes breasts in this situation. Along with looking hideous, Mother is one of the hardest boss battles in the game, as there’s lots of tentacles as well as the Mother itself.

3 Worst: Ser Cauthrien

Not many people the words surrender, especially in video games. With this fight against Ser Cauthrien, you have the choice to die or to surrender. Of course, it’s entirely possible to kill her, but you need one hell of a strong party to be able to do so, as she’s a Demi-god.

At the point in the game, the game is saying, look surrender, she’s escorting a Queen, have you got a chance here? But alas, honor is a stake, and no one likes to walk away from a boss that they can kill. It just might take hours and hours to do so.

2 Best: The Archdemon

Is it possible to not have an epic dragon boss in the top five of the best bosses? Not if the undead dragon can help it. Despite the game being called Dragon Age, it surprisingly lacks in dragons, but that is what makes them more special when they appear. When the fight with the Archdemon appears, you should be terrified, that’s an Old God, is he going to set fire to your entire party, or maybe eat one of them.

In this fight, you are not alone, as masses of knights are on top of these massive battlements aiding you, but because the area is so vast, the dragon will often fly away to go gobble up some knights a distance aways. The dragon want’s to do what it does best, which is to cause destruction. The sole focus isn’t only you.

1 Worst: Orsino

This fight is a bad boss because of its shocking writing. Throughout the entire game, it’s possible to side with the mages, to agree with Orsino that not all mages are the same, and the acts of some shouldn’t condemn them all. However, at the end of the game, even when siding with the mages, he turns into this horrifying abomination, and this happens on both choices.

Orsino in the game has been a reasonable, level headed character, yes he’s got his own agenda’s but to go completely out of character and want to kill everybody is terrible writing. At least, Meredith, the knight commander of the Templars, is actually insane.
