It’s a new year for games in 2020, and it’s looking to be a good year. There are some interesting remakes on the horizon, such as Resident Evil 3, but also brand new additions to famous franchises, such as Halo Infinite. Many franchises are also currently working on brand new games, according to rumors floating around, so the chances are good that some exciting news is on the horizon for everyone.
While there are some games that have been confirmed for release this year, there are other games that could potentially see some content come out, even if there are still big question marks. Regardless, devoted fans are never ones to lose hope when it comes to their favorite titles. With that, let’s take a look at some games we’re all anticipating for this year, and some we desperately wish we could see return.
10 Anticipated: System Shock
For those who aren’t exactly caught up with the news, yes: System Shock 2 Remastered is scheduled to be released this year, a piece of good news amid the confirmation that System Shock 3 probably isn’t coming. A fully updated game should be out on Steam sometime in 2020 thanks to Nightdive Studios’ desire to bring this classic survival horror FPS shooter back from limbo.
The game is already listed on Steam, with some early game footage available as well. So far, the game looks absolutely stunning and since it’ll definitely follow the old, trusty premise of the original games, it’s expected to be a massive success.
9 Fans Want To See: Silent Hill
If there’s one fanbase that has the right to feel completely left out over the last few years, it’s undoubtedly the Silent Hill one. Not only was it a tragedy to see P.T. pulled out and canceled after such a burst in popularity, but the silence after that has been even more insulting.
This is a franchise that desperately needs to come back, for the sake of the fans. After years of going downhill with titles that failed to do justice to the original games, it’s absolutely vital that we hear something brand new and interesting from Silent Hill sooner rather than later.
8 Anticipated: Animal Crossing
Well, at this point, it’s safe to say Animal Crossing isn’t just being anticipated: it’s actually coming and there’s already so much information on what players can expect to get. As early as March 20th, Animal Crossing enthusiasts will be able to get their hands on the brand new title in the franchise, Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
The new installment for Nintendo is returning with a whole host of new characters, but also a set of familiar faces from the previous game. Aside from The Sims franchise, this is one of the most anticipated life simulation games to arrive in 2020.
7 Fans Want To See: Overwatch
Since Blizzcon 2019, Overwatch fans have been patiently waiting and waiting for more information on what’s to come for the much-awaited Overwatch 2. While Jeff Kaplan stated the production team would be going silent to work hard on the game, whispers of a release as early as 2020 have already circulated on social media.
Given the dire state that Overwatch was in last year and still somewhat continues to be in early 2020, it’s absolutely vital the fans receive something more than just balance changes and quick band-aid fixes. While hero pools are on the horizon, we definitely want our hands on that Overwatch 2 demo.
6 Anticipated: The Last Of Us
It’s no secret by now, thanks to all the trailers and teasers that Naughty Dog has graced us with in the past few years. One of the best games of the last decade is returning with a second installment, a project that must have required time and devotion to really nail down so as to not disappoint fans.
Scheduled to release on May 29th of 2020, The Last Of Us Part II will feature an all grown-up Ellie that players were already familiar with since the first game. As a playable character, Ellie seems to be much more mobile than Joel, which will drastically change the scope of the gameplay.
5 Fans Want To See: The Sims
A franchise currently at crossroads and with a ton of uncertainty on where to go from there, The Sims is a massive question mark to all Simmers out there. With Discover University finally out of the way, it’s hard not to wonder what more The Sims 4 can do. Luckily, from what can be deduced from EA’s statements, a new game is already in development.
One of the biggest aspects of a potential The Sims 5 game will definitely be multiplayer, which is something people have been asking for time and time again. While it’s still unclear how this will manifest itself, fans are right to want to hear more about what EA might be cooking this year. Hopefully, we get something by the end of 2020.
4 Anticipated: Diablo
Blizzcon 2019 definitely opened up with a bang by waving goodbye to Diablo III and saying hello to a beautiful, brand new and even darker Diablo IV. This next installment of the game should have fans thrilled, as it’s basically a whole lot of fan service all packed into one game.
The art style and the violence greatly inspired by earlier Diablo titles, the fourth installment in the franchise has been scheduled to come out sometime this year and will absolutely revolutionize medieval fantasy RPG games.
3 Fans Want To See: Half-Life
When it comes to Valve’s ultra-popular Half-Life franchise, there’s a lot of animosity among fans right now. It’s been years since Half-Life 2 came out, and people have been asking and begging for Valve to release a third installment for the game series, which basically paved the way for so many survival shooters.
Valve has been silent on the issue, and while Half-Life 3 has reached a meme status among fans by now, never give up hope. 2020 is another year, and who knows, it could be the year that Valve finally decides to turn things around.
2 Anticipated: Cyberpunk 2077
Although Cyberpunk 2077 is not exactly a long-running franchise (yet), it’s no doubt one of the most anticipated games of 2020 and has been so for a few years now. After the game’s release date was postponed until September in order to ensure a fully polished title would be out for all the fans, the thrill and excitement only seemed to increase.
Cyberpunk 2077 is bound to be an immense success, as it comes from the hands of CD Projekt Red, a studio well-known for its brilliant The Witcher series. As the first game, we’re more than likely to see it expand through DLCs and sequels, as this masterpiece finally gets released.
1 Fans Want To See: The Elder Scrolls
While not as rare and meme-like as Half-Life 3, The Elder Scrolls VI still feels a bit more like a myth than actual reality. The only thing fans have really seen is the title itself with a background depicting mountains and plains. However, that’s about all we have and Bethesda is keeping its mouth tightly shut on the game.
Considering Skyrim has been out for a decade now, it feels a bit like a slap on the face to hear Bethesda focus its efforts on games like Starfield. The Elder Scrolls franchise needs some continuation as soon as possible because milking the success of Skyrim isn’t going to cut it for fans for much longer.
