The level of depth that has been given to the friendship mechanic in Stardew Valley is almost unmatched. With over two dozen NPCs to level up your friendship with, Stardew has a diverse cast of characters that each have their own relationship with your farmer. These relationships can be developed through gifts, talking to them regularly, the movie theater, and much more.
Each villager has different “heart events” that occur. These are cutscenes and dialogue options that occur when you reach certain friendship milestones or “heart levels” with them. Some of them are charming, some are sad, and others are kind of boring. Here are some of the best and worst of the Stardew Valley heart events, ranked.
14 Worst - Pierre’s Stash
There is only one heart event that you will have with Pierre, and it occurs when you reach six hearts with him. Enter his shop after reaching this friendship level, and a cutscene will play. Your character will, for some reason, snoop around in Pierre’s bedroom. Behind the bookshelf, you’ll find a “secret stash,” and Pierre will confront you.
He’ll ask you not to tell anyone about it. If you agree to keep his secret, you’ll gain some friendship points, but if you tell him to confess to his wife, you’ll lose a whopping 500 friendship points together. This is an uncomfortable situation — you either help a man lie, or you scold him on how he behaves in his marriage. Also, many players have theorized about what the “stash” is. Is it illicit substances, a dirty magazine, or something else? We may never know.
13 Best - Leah Becomes a Local
During the developing friendship you form with Leah, you’ll help guide her ideas for her art projects. During her two-heart event, she’ll ask you for advice on raising money as an artist. You can either suggest she sell her art online or that she host an art show in town. If you choose the latter, you’ll unlock a scene when you reach eight hearts with Leah. Enter town between 3 and 5 p.m. after she invites you to her show.
At the show, many of the other villagers will express their appreciation for Leah and her work, and she’ll be very grateful. This is a nice one because it really feels like you’ve contributed to the character’s development. And, Leah expresses feeling like she doesn’t know people very well sometimes, so this helps get her more acquainted with the locals, which is very heartwarming.
12 Worst - Group Confrontation
If you give someone that you can marry a Bouquet in Stardew Valley, it’s accepted as a clear sign of your romantic interest, and the two of you will begin officially dating. However, there’s nothing to stop you from giving a Bouquet to some of the other marriage candidates around town, too. You can date any combination of them, if you so wish.
However, they might not take too kindly to it. If you have given a Bouquet to and reached ten hearts with all the marriage candidates of one gender, you’re in for a rude awakening.
If you’ve wooed all of the men, entering the Stardrop Saloon will trigger this event, and if you’ve wooed all the ladies, it’ll happen at Haley and Emily’s house. They’ll confront you and all agree to give you the cold shoulder for a week, where they won’t be very nice and will refuse gifts. If you have a Rabbit’s Foot in your inventory, though, you’ll save yourself from this treatment and avoid the negative consequences.
11 Best - Leo’s Big Move
Leo is a newer character who was added to the game in the 1.5 update. He lives with his Parrot family on Ginger Island after his parents were lost at sea. At first, he won’t speak with you, but once you give the Parrots some Golden Walnuts, he’ll warm up to you a bit. After you reach six hearts with him, he’ll move to the mainland and become friends with the townspeople. He’s especially close with Linus, who he lives beside and shares much with.
It’s a heartwarming scene when Leo and Linus meet and Leo agrees to move away from the island, and it’s very cute how quickly he takes to life on the mainland. He’ll still visit Ginger Island from time to time, too, which is very nice to see.
10 Worst - Elliot’s Boat Ride
Once you’ve started dating Elliott, you can trigger his ten-heart event. You’ll have to head to the beach in the morning on a day when it isn’t raining. He’ll invite you to go on a maiden voyage for his boat in the ocean.
What makes this event weird is that Elliott kisses you and you’re given a choice to tell him it made you uncomfortable if you want. But, you’re stranded on a boat with this man in the middle of the ocean with no escape. Also, he spends basically the entire thing talking about himself.
9 Best - Shane’s Arcade Addiction
Shane is such a complex character. At first, he’s incredibly mean. But as he warms up to you, he’ll open up about his drinking problem. If you choose to marry Shane, you’ll help him recover from his problem. It’s nice to have a positive impact on someone who truly appreciates you.
During his new fourteen-heart event, it seems like Shane has started drinking again. Worried, you and Marnie will investigate. It turns out he’s actually just trying to get the high score in the arcade game in the saloon. It’s a cute scene, and it’s nice to see Shane find a new hobby to help stay away from drinking.
8 Worst - Clint and Emily
This event makes many people uncomfortable. It’s well-intended and not necessarily meant to be unsettling, but it definitely is to some. Clint, the local blacksmith, has a crush on Emily. However, he never has the courage to speak to her, falling victim to his own nerves.
During both his three- and six-heart event, Clint will be creepily following Emily and trying to admit his feelings. It isn’t made apparent that Emily feels the same way, and Clint comes across as a bit weird. It’s an uncomfortable pair of scenes, even if Emily does agree to a date in the end.
7 Best - Alex on the Beach
Alex is one of the marriage candidates in town. He comes across as a meathead jock who only cares about sports and his appearance. Level up your friendship with him, however, and he’ll show you a softer side with a sad past.
Alex’s mother died when he was younger, and he’s struggled with his grief since. During his eight-heart event, you’ll find him crying on the beach. He’ll confess to you that it’s the anniversary of his mother’s death. You had also learned during an earlier event that his father had abused him and his mother. You’ll give him a bit of encouragement and he’ll feel better.
6 Worst - Sam and Jodi
If you’re dating Sam and level your friendship to ten-hearts, you’ll trigger a cutscene where the two you are about to have a romantic tryst in his bedroom. As things are getting steamy, Jodi, his mother, will knock on the door. From here, Sam lies to her and you have the option to continue with the love-making.
It feels wrong to lie to Jodi, who is typically very kind and caring to the player, and having “relations” with her son under her nose feels gross and rude.
5 Best - Caroline’s Tea Ceremony
Caroline is another parent in town that is very kind to the player. From the moment you meet her, she’ll take a liking to you and seems to be very lovely. During her two-heart event, she shares something truly special.
Entering the sunroom in the back of her and Pierre’s house will trigger this cutscene. Caroline will share her love of tea with you and explain that she finds the room relaxing. She’ll then share how to make a tea bush with the player and invite them to come by the sunroom whenever they want. It’s a very sweet and charming scene.
4 Worst - Kent Yelling
Kent and his wife, Jodi, share what seems like a stressful relationship, at least for her. He is a war vet who is gone a lot, and Jodi is left to take care of two kids by herself. Kent’s two-heart event makes the player feel worse about this situation.
Jodi will be making popcorn, and Kent will yell at her for reminding him of the sounds of war and triggering his PTSD. The player can decide who to side with, but regardless, it’s uncomfortable seeing such a nice woman be yelled at, and unfortunate to see Kent struggling with his PTSD.
3 Best - Haley’s Photography
Haley is often made out to be a vapid and shallow snob. She’s rude to the player and only seems to care about herself and her appearance. This is exactly what makes her eight-heart scene so special, amazingly. As Haley warms up to you, she’ll thaw out her icy heart and start to show an interest in hobbies besides herself.
During this cutscene, Haley will show you her interest in photography, and you’ll have an impromptu photoshoot with Marnie’s cows. It’s warming to see Haley have a passion and it’s hard not to be proud of her character development.
2 Worst - Penny vs Pam
If none of the above bad heart events made you uncomfortable, this one surely will. During Penny’s four-heart event, she’ll ask you to help clean up the trailer. While you’re tidying, Penny’s mother Pam will show up and berate her for making someone else clean her home. The two will fight and it’ll be extremely uncomfortable.
It’s really hard to watch this scene play out, because of the heartbreak for Penny and because Pam is typically a likable character. This is by far one of the worst heart events to sit through.
1 Best - Emily’s Fashion Show
Reaching an eight-heart level with Emily with trigger this event. She’ll ask you to come to the Mayor’s Manor that day. Once there, she’ll explain that she wants to help the other villagers express themselves through fashion. She’ll encourage the others to choose an outfit that really expresses their personality.
Shane will dress like a goth with spiky hair, Abigail dons a full suit of armor, Robin lets her girly side fly with her hair down over a fun dress, and Mayor Lewis chooses to sport a fancy hat, cape, and walking stick. It’s a fun, light-hearted scene that leaves you with a feeling of happiness for the other villagers that participated.
