After two years of incessantly asking for it, Niantic might finally be giving Pokémon GO players Party Hat Wurmple.

With the addition of some brand new creatures to the roster via Sword and Shield, the headcount for the number of Pokémon species has now passed the 900 mark. Remember when there were only 151 and not only could we remember all of them, but also the numbers attached to each and every one? Those days have long gone, at least for most of us.

Fast forward to today and for some avid trainers, 900 Pokémon is still not enough. Although not every generation has been unleashed on Pokémon GO quite yet, completist trainers have been given a few added extras. Not just shiny Pokémon, but also a variety of Pokémon wearing different hats. Mostly Pikachus linked to different events. However, this New Year might usher in a few others.

Dataminers have delved into the game’s code and discovered a number of Pokémon wearing party hats might be about to venture out into the wild, as first covered on Reddit. The Pokémon are presumably waiting patiently for New Year to roll around in a couple of weeks time at which point they will venture out into the world for us to catch.

So which Pokémon have made the party hat cut? Raticate, Wobbafett and yes, finally, the humble Wurmple. After making an appearance in a party hat on a loading screen in 2018, leading trainers to believe the alternate version of the bug would be available shortly after, Party Hat Wurmple might finally be about to make its non-loading screen debut in Pokémon GO.

Party Hat Wurmple became so popular two years ago that it sparked memes and campaigns requesting that it become a Pokémon we can store in a ball. Finding it in the game’s code is not definitive proof that this is finally about to happen, but it’s definitely promising. Not long to wait until New Year so if Party Hat Wurmple is coming, along with his Party Hat-wearing buddies, trainers won’t have long to wait to get their hands on them.
