The man who made Spider-Man 2’s web-swinging mechanic is releasing a new game on PS4 next week.

Jamie Fristrom, who prototyped Spider-Man 2’s “ground-breaking swinging mechanic”, claims that his new game, Energy Hook, is “the best game [he’s] ever made”, and sees players swinging, running and boosting their way through levels in an “extreme sport of the future”.

“You swing from a grapple beam, run on walls, jump and boost with your jetpack, and do flips and poses midair, all to earn style points,” Fristrom says, explaining Energy Hook to PlayStation Blog. “Chain your tricks to get multipliers for massive scores.

“There are also race challenges where you’ll swing through the levels as quickly as possible. Doing tricks earns you boost and keeps you in the air longer; use this to your advantage and get the best time possible!”

Energy Hook actually launched on Steam Early Access last August and appears to have gathered ‘Positive’ early reviews from players.

The game includes a range of levels, Fristrom continues, including a cyberpunk city, floating rock islands, and “Tron-like” areas. But don’t expect a story, he warns: “it’s all about the gameplay”.

“There’s nothing else like it,” Fristrom concludes. “I’ve never put so much of myself into a game. This is my magnum opus – the best game I’ve ever made. I still get lost in it and lose all sense of time. I hope you like it too!”

Energy Hook launches on PS4 next Tuesday, July 5.
