There’s a new BioShock coming, although it won’t be coming anytime soon.
It’s been a while since we heard from BioShock, the critically acclaimed series from 2K Games. BioShock Infinite got its last expansion in 2014, then after a remastered BioShock: The Collection which included reworked versions of the first two games, 2K shelved the franchise. An odd choice considering the series’ commercial success.
However, it looks like 2K has decided to dust off the series at least one more time. In an announcement on Monday, 2K said that a new BioShock game is coming from a brand new studio.
The studio is called Cloud Chamber, and it will be hosted at two locations: Novato, California, which is where 2K has its global HQ, and Montreal, Canada. The Montreal studio is actually 2K’s first Canadian studio, which is surprising given the number of game developers that have studios in Montreal.
We don’t have any info on what this BioShock game will be about, but we do know that it will be at least “several years” before it arrives. That’ll put the new BioShock squarely in the middle of the next-gen console war.
“As we continue growing our product portfolio, we remain inspired by opportunities to invest further in our valuable IP, great people, and their collective, long-term potential,” said David Ismailer, President of 2K. “BioShock is one of the most beloved, critically praised and highest-rated franchises of the last console generation. We can’t wait to see where its powerful narrative and iconic, first-person shooter gameplay head in the future with our new studio team at Cloud Chamber leading the charge.”
Kelly Gilmore, a 22-year industry veteran with over 40 games under her belt will head the studio, while original art director for BioShock and BioShock Infinite Scott Sinclair will return to help with development. According to Video Games Chronicle, original series creator Ken Levine is not involved.
Will this new BioShock return to the floating city of Columbia, the sunken city of Rapture, or will we get an entirely new dystopian metropolis filled with a twisted form of Americana? We’ll find out in due time.
