The PlayStation Classic was intended to be Sony’s nostalgia console, similar to what Nintendo did with its NES and SNES Classic Editions. The PlayStation Classic launched earlier this month to lukewarm reception. Demand has not been high for this console, and sales appear to be low because the system is already on sale for almost half the price.
To put the PlayStation Classic’s price drop in perspective, let’s look at the NES and SNES Classic Editions. Nintendo stated in its financial briefing that combined global sales for the miniature consoles exceeded 10 million units. According to Famitsu, the SNES Classic sold 368,913 units within its first four days of release in Japan. How many PlayStation Classic units were sold in Japan during its first week? According Media Create (translated by Game Industry.biz), the PlayStation Classic sold 120,000 units during its first week. That is an incredibly low number in comparison. According to the NPD Group, in the month of June, the NES Classic Edition sold more units than any other video game console. Clearly, Nintendo delivered products that many fans appreciate, while it appears Sony delivered a product just to rival what Nintendo has put out.
With the price drop, the PlayStation Classic could see a surge in sales. At $59.99, players get access to some memorable titles, such as Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and the first Persona. The North American release also includes Syphon Filter, Twisted Metal, among others. Unfortunately, the NA version does not include Parasite Eve. Overall though, fans should find the new price more justifiable. It remains to be seen if the PlayStation Classic can end up selling well, or remain a flop.
