There’s still a World Beyond for The Walking Dead universe. It’s just not going to arrive until later this year.
AMC announced via its social media channels that the latest Walking Dead series, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, has been delayed from its original April 12 release date. The show will now premiere sometime later this year.
Though AMC does not mention a reason for the delay in its announcement, it is undoubtedly due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The coronavirus has halted production on just about every TV show and movie in the entertainment industry. Other shows that have announced release date or return date delays include Fargo, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow.
What’s interesting about this decision, however is that, according to EW, The Walking Dead: World Beyond has already completed its filming. The delay could be related to other delays within The Walking Dead universe. Both The Walking Dead season 11 and Fear the Walking Dead season 6 have had to suspend production in the wake of the pandemic.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond would have premiered the same night as The Walking Dead season 10 finale.
Whenever The Walking Dead: World Beyond premieres, it will be a bold new direction for The Walking Dead expanded universe. The show is described as a “two-season limited event” meaning that it will conclude following the end of its second season. The first season was set to have 10 episodes. The show is also set to examine the zombie apocalypse from the perspective of young people who have grown up within it. AMC’s description for the series reads:
The Walking Dead: World Beyond was co-created by Walking Dead universe producer Scott Gimple and Matthew Negrete with Negrete serving as showrunner.
