Most players of the Pokémon games only think about which Pokémon are the strongest. The weakest of the Pokémon deserve a little recognition too – even if it’s only to highlight how weak they are compared to the other Pokémon. Not surprisingly, this list features many Pokémon of the bug type; which often have a very weak beginning evolutionary form. Here is a list of the weakest Pokémon by type for players who want to challenge themselves – or to know which pokémon are not worth the time and effort of leveling-up.

Wishiwashi – Water Type

Wishiwashi is not just the weakest water-type Pokémon, it is possibly the weakest of all the Pokémon. Compared to most other Pokémon the stats of Wishiwashi, particularly their attack and defense, are laughably low. This Pokémon gets some powerful moves like Hydro Pump and Double-Edge, but they are wasted due to its low stats. It can change into a school form if it level 20 or higher and its hit points are higher than 25% of its maximum total. The school form is of Wishiwashi is actually quite powerful.

Blipbug – Bug Type

Blipbug is described as being very smart; however, it is also one of the weakest in terms of strength in battle. Blipbug only learns one move – Struggle Bug. This move is not very strong with an attack power of 50, but at least it lowers the opponent’s special attacks rating by one level and has an accuracy of 100. To make matters worse Blipbug cannot learn any TM moves. If a trainer can get Blipbug to level 10 it evolves into Dottler – which is much more formidable in battle and gains the psychic type.

Sunkern – Grass Type

Sunkern was introduced way back in generation 2, and it is still the weakest of the grass-type Pokémon. It is a shame that Sunkern’s stats are so low, because they actually get some really powerful moves – like Solar Beam and Double-Edge. Sunkern also have some useful abilities; like waking from the sleep state quickly and stat boosts while in sunlight. Thankfully this little grass type Pokémon can be evolved into the much stronger Sunflora by using the Sun Stone.

Snom – Ice Type

Snom is a small prickly bug and ice-type Pokémon that eats snow. Snoms are only marginally stronger than blipbugs; they learn two moves instead of one, from leveling-up - Struggle Bug and Powder Snow. Powder Snow is weaker than Struggle Bug with an attack power rating of 40, but also has a 10% chance of freezing the opponent. If the trainer gets their friendship level with Snom high enough it will evolve into Frosmoth. Frosmoths are of course more powerful, but they also don’t get many powerful moves.

Azurill – Normal and Fairy Type

Azurills have been around since Generation 3, and are a classic example of a Pokémon family that have some great moves but also very low stats – especially attack and special attack.

Azurill itself doesn’t get overly powerful moves, but with a high friendship it will evolve into Marill; which at level 18 can evolve into Azumarill. Marill and Azurmarill change from normal type to water Pokémon, but keep the fairy type. They also get some very, very powerful attack moves, like Hydro Pump, Super Power, and Double-Edge.

Weedle – Poison Type

Weedles were introduced in the first Pokémon games. Yet after eight generations, it is still the weakest poison type. The final evolution of Weedle is Beedrill. Beedrills are much stronger than Weedles and Kakunas, but compared to most Pokémon it is relatively weak as well. The one good thing about Weedles is that they are great at running away during a fight against a wild Pokémon.

Ralts – Psychic Type

It’s kind of strange to think of something with psychic powers as weak. Ralts is a tiny psychic fairy type that, like Azurill, is weak but also gets some very powerful moves as it gets higher level. Unlike Azurill, however, when Ralts evolves it becomes much stronger. At level 20 it evolves into Kirlia, and Kirlias evolve into either Gallade or Gardevoir – both of which are extremely strong Pokémon.

Pichu – Electric Type

Before Pikachu becomes Pikachu it is Pichu. These tiny electric mice, introduced in generation 2, have very low stats and a move-set lacking in moves with decent attack power. Their Lightning Rod ability is useful in multi-Pokémon battles, but since Pikachus retain this ability there isn’t a reason not to evolve Pichu. The final evolution of this family is Raichu; which is strong enough to justify being taken out of the storage system every now and then.

Tyrogue – Fighting

Tyrogue, introduced in generation 2, is the first evolutionary stage of Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, and Hitmontop. Like many other Pokémon on this list Tyrogue does not learn many moves through leveling-up –probably because they are meant to be evolved when possible.

Tyrogue does begin with the move Fake Out; which is a great move with which to start a fight as it causes flinching, but it is not very strong. This Pokémon has three options when evolving as noted earlier - the trainer decides which form their Tyrogue will evolve into by its attack and defense ratings.

Wooper – Ground Type

Wooper, introduced in generation 2, is a tiny water Pokémon that is also a ground type – the weakest ground type Pokémon and one of the weakest of the water type. What Wooper does have are some good abilities; Dampen prevents an opposing Pokémon from self-destructing moves, and Water Absorb causes water attacks against Wooper to heal it instead of doing damage. Wooper evolves into Quagsire at level 20, but its speed is still terrible.

Poochyena – Dark Type

Poochyena was introduced in generation 3, and is one of those guilty-pleasure P okémon many trainers use out of nostalgia. With the exception of its attack (which isn’t that high either), Poochyena’s stats are very low – especially its defense. With such stats, one would figure Poochyena would have some good moves for balance, but its move-set is lacking in powerful attacks – though it does get a variety of attack types. Poochyena evolves into Mightyena, which is a middling Pokémon.

Slugma – Fire Type

One has to go fairly far down the list of the weakest Pokémon before they get to a fire type, but when they do it will be Slugma. Slugma, introduced in generation 2, is a small lava based Pokémon. It is very slow - being only marginally faster than Wooper.

Slugmas get some decent attack moves like Flamethrower and Earth Power, and their special attack is high enough to make those attacks painful for opposing Pokémon. Their other stats, however, are quite low. At level 38 Slugma evolves into Magcargo; which has some reasonably high stats – except speed.

Combee – Flying Type

This small bug and flying-type Pokémon was introduced in generation 4, and despite being fast, has some very low hit points, attack and defense stats. The evolved form of Combee is Vespiquen. Vespiquen is fairly strong and learns some powerful moves from a nice selection of move types - like Destiny Bond - that make it a good choice to use in battle.

Shedinja – Ghost Type

Shedinja is the empty shell left behind by Ninjask, but is animated by a spirit. Unlike the other Pokémon on this list, Shedinja is the final evolutionary form of its family, not the first. Shedinja has only one hit point, but its ability, Wonder Guard, prevents all but supereffective attacks from hitting. Unfortunately, Shedinjas do not learn overly powerful attack moves; though they do learn moves from many attack types.

Rolycoly – Rock Type

Rolycolys were introduced in generation 8 and are the weakest rock type Pokémon; only narrowly taking that title from Rockruff. Rolycoly evolves into Carkol at level 18; which evolves into Coalossal at level 34. These two evolved forms only have one move that Rolycoly doesn’t learn, Burn Up, and their speed doesn’t improve much when evolving.

Applin – Dragon Type

Applin, introduced in generation 8, lives its entire life in an apple core – earning it the nickname “Apple Core Pokémon”. This Pokémon can evolve into Flapple or Appletun depending on what type of apple it is fed. Both of the evolutions are very different from one another, and totally change how the Pokémon is used in battle by its trainer.
