Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, better known as Regis, is a surprising old friend of Geralt’s. He has been mentioned in multiple games and was an important character in the books. However, he didn’t make his first appearance in the games until Blood and Wine, the expansion of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Fans were thrilled at his addition to Blood and Wine, especially in such a pivotal role, as he has always been a very popular character in the book series. Many fans enjoy his relationship with Geralt. The following list details some hidden details about Regis you may not know.
10 Regis Has A Mule Named Drakuul
Geralt may have Roach but Regis has Drakuul the mule. Since Regis has become something of a fan favorite over the years, many people also love his mule, whose name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the iconic and infamous vampire, Dracula.
He stole the mule from the Lyrian Army during the Second Northern War. Despite being a higher vampire himself, he seemed to be quite endeared by his new partner in crime. Drakuul appears in Lady of the Lake and The Tower of the Swallow.
9 Regis Was Part Of The Gharasham Vampire Tribe
At one point in the DLC, Regis reveals that he and Detlaff, and The Queen of the Night, were all a part of the Gharasham vampire tribe. There are multiple ancient tribes of vampires and the Gharasham is one of three most ancient tribes – also including the Ammurun and Tdet tribes – that came to the Continent during the Conjunction of Spheres.
The Conjunction of Spheres was an event that occurred 1,500 years before the novel began and brought creatures like vampires and ghouls into the dimension. The Gharasham tribe was different from the Annurun and Tdet as they tried to acclimate themselves into the Nordling culture.
8 Regis Had A Former Relationship With The Queen Of The Night
The Queen of the Night is a higher vampire (a Bruxa) who made appearances in the first Witcher game, and in Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. She was also briefly mentioned in the book, Baptism of Fire. She runs and owns a brothel fittingly called The House of the Queen of the Night, located in the Trade Quarter in Vizima.
The majority of vampires who work there are also vampires who feed on their guests as a form of compensation. The Queen once revealed that she and Regis had been lovers in the past. Little else is revealed about their relationship.
7 He Spent 50 Years Underground
A higher vampire can only be truly killed by another higher vampire, but that doesn’t mean they can’t come close to death or be wounded to the point of taking decades to regenerate. Regis discovered this the hard way when he was a younger vampire. He became addicted to drinking blood – something unnecessary for higher vampires to do.
It’s more akin to drinking alcohol for humans. His desperation for blood put him in the crosshairs of angry villagers who discovered them in their village well. They cut his head off, staked him, coated him holy water, and then buried him. It took 50 years for him to regenerate and heal fully.
6 Regis Is Mentioned In A Book You Can Read In The Witcher 3
There is a book titled “My Evening with a Vampire” that can be found in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It will provide you with a couple of bestiary entries: for ekimmaras and high vampires, in addition to a formula to create an ekimmara decoction.
You can find the book in multiple places in the main game, check anywhere with lots of books around. The book gave an important clue about Regis, who would go on to appear in the Blood and Wine DLC. The book is written by a man who Regis once saved from a fire. Regis also told the man some vital facts about higher vampires, which he wrote down in the book.
5 Regis Served As A Barber-Surgeon In Brugge
Regis lived in Dillingen, a city in Brugge. Brugge is located near Cintra and Attre. He owned a shop and a home there and worked as a barber-surgeon.
Barber-surgeons in the middle ages served the same function as one would anticipate based on the name alone. They could trim hair, cut hair, shave facial hair, and also perform minor surgical procedures like bloodletting and teeth pulling.
4 Regis Sacrificed Himself For Yennefer
During the fight at Stygga Castle to save Ciri, Regis got between a Chapter of Sorcerers member named Vilgefortz just as he was about to kill Yennefer. However, for his involvement, Regis wound up getting brutally torn apart by the skilled sorcerer.
He essentially melted Regis down to nothing but a smear of blood and energy. However, he remained alive because only another higher vampire can murder a higher vampire, as we’ve mentioned. Detlaff is the one who worked tirelessly to regenerate Regis, hence why he feels he owes Detlaff a great debt in Blood and Wine.
3 It Is Possible That Regis Is Still Dead In The Books
As we discussed above, Regis was utterly destroyed by the sorcerer to the point where it seemed like he was dead. While it is a rule that higher vampires can only be killed by their own kind, the game canon exists outside of the book canon.
That means we don’t have the word of god (or the book’s author, Andrzej Sapkowski) that Regis is still dead. In the realm of the books, he’s still dead – or, perhaps even more horrifically, he’s just existing as nothing but a smear of blood because Detlaff doesn’t save him.
2 He Has His Own Gwent Card
Not every character has a Gwent card, but Regis was a popular enough and important enough role to get one of his own. Some fans joke about his appearance, both on the card and in the game, since the creators drew him with a receding hairline.
His card is a neutral close combat one. It’s given as a random reward. Some fans also feel that his card should have been far more powerful than it ended up being.
1 He Keeps Himself Smelling Of Herbs And Perfumes
As an extremely powerful higher vampire, it’s important for Regis to keep his identity a secret. He doesn’t like risking anyone finding out his true nature.
To protect against that, Regis is always cloaked in herbs and perfumes. He’s a skilled herbalist and knows how to brew everything from moonshine to mandrake concoctions. The main reason he uses such strong-smelling scents is to keep animals at bay.
